How does RTK estimate a precise position?
RTK uses observations from a reference station and rover. Carrier-phase differencing reduces correlated errors while ambiguities are estimated. Reference coordinates, satellite availability, observation quality and timely corrections all matter.
Fixed versus float solutions
A fixed solution has resolved ambiguities with integer constraints. A float solution has not yet reached reliable integer fixing. Solution status is useful quality information, not a standalone guarantee of machine safety or accuracy in every condition.
CORS, NTRIP, RTCM and VRS
- CORS: continuously operating reference stations supporting network positioning services.
- NTRIP: a protocol for transporting GNSS correction data over networks.
- RTCM: standardized messages commonly used for observations and corrections.
- VRS: the virtual reference station method used in network RTK.
Compare convergence consistently
Cold start, first fixing and re-fixing after a brief loss of lock are different processes. One recovery measurement does not establish behavior for every startup condition. Record geometry, baseline, correction age and the proportion of successful fixes.
What happens under obstruction?
Vision, inertial sensing and odometry can provide complementary constraints. Longer obstruction makes accumulated error, quality status and coordinate consistency on recovery more significant. HOPO fusion is evaluated against the actual configuration and environment.
